Straighter teeth, happy smile!
Orthodontics is a specialty within dentistry that focuses on correcting bites, occlusion, and the straightness of teeth. The purpose of orthodontic treatment is to create a healthy bite—straight teeth that properly meet opposing teeth in the opposite jaw. A good bite makes it easier for you to bite, chew and speak.
Phase I (mixed dentition)
This phase of treatment is important to diagnose bad habits, breathing difficulties, and growing problems that could be affecting correct teeth alignment.
When these problems are detected and treated early in the patient’s life, the likelihood of surgery and extracting teeth is reduced, and treatments are less invasive and cheaper.
For some patients it is fine to wait until their growing is complete and all permanent teeth are present, but other patients need to take advantage that they are still in the growing phase to properly correct their problem.
When teeth function in their proper alignment, it prevents TMJ and digestive problems and at the same time it enhances the patient’s confidence while looking good.
Phase II (permanent dentition)
This phase of treatment include conditions that require the movement of teeth and the correction of malrelationships and malformations.
Adjustments between and among teeth and facial bones are made through the application of force appliances and sometimes through stimulation and redirection of functional forces within the dentofacial structure.
This includes treatment of all forms of malocclusion of the teeth and surrounding structures. This phase may or may not involve extractions.
Bad habits control therapy
There are a number of bad habits that can contribute to malalignment and affect the oral health of children.
These can include tongue thrusting, thumb sucking, lip and cheek sucking/biting, nail biting, mouth breathing, and bottle drinking.
Most of these problems can cause teeth to move forward, prevent permanent teeth from erupting, unnatural wear of the enamel, as well as cause a change in the dentofacial structure of a child.
It is wise to correct these with therapy and appliances to avoid severe facial deformation and breathing problems.
Early treatment of bad habits can even prevent the need of extensive surgery in the future.
Interceptive orthodontics allows the dentist to intercede or correct problems as they develop.
Such treatment may occur in the primary or transitional dentition; it may reduce the severity of the malformation and mitigate its cause.
This treatment allows the dentist to prevent, correct, or eliminate irregularities and mal positions and can prevent the need for more extensive treatment later.
Based on your individual treatment plan, a series of custom-made, clear aligners can be created specifically for you.
These aligners are made of a smooth, comfortable, BPA-free plastic that won’t irritate your cheeks and gums like traditional metal braces often do.
Simply wear them throughout the day, and remove them when you eat or to brush and floss your teeth.
As you wear each set of aligners, your teeth gently and gradually begin to shift into place.
And because they’re virtually invisible, most people won’t even notice you’re wearing them.
